Once In a Lifetime
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself “Well, how did I get here?”And you may tell yourself “This is not my beautiful house”
And you may tell yourself “This is not my beautiful wife”And you may say to yourself “My god, what have I done?”
So my dad calls and complains about his brother. “He’s 60-years-old. Don’t you think it’s time to settle down and start a real life?”
Ten or fifteen years ago my uncle had that “real life.” He had the beautiful house, with the beautiful wife, two beautiful children, a loyal dog, and an established career. He left it all. I don’t know the reasons. Eventually he found himself in Florida.
My dad continued: “Your uncle is down in Florida. He works in the seasonal department of the Home Depot and refuses any promotions. He makes just enough money to afford his one-bedroom apartment, his Shelby Mustang GT, and play golf everyday. On top of that, he has a different girl every three months. He’s wasting his life. He listens to you; why don’t you talk to him?”
Silence.
“Dad? I didn’t know you could sign up for that.”
