American Idol Blog Final 8
This is a semi-live blog of the April 8th American Idol.
In attendance is: Me - I’m a 43-year-old guy who thinks he’s a music producer (at least when American Idol is on). The Girl - My daughter, an almost 17-year-old girl who actually votes for this stuff.
Tonight’s theme: Inspirational Songs
:::
Michael Johns : Dream On
Me:
Not bad. Always a solid performance. He even went after and got the high notes. I do agree a little with Simon when he says he doesn’t like it when Johns is trying to be a “wanna-be rock star.”
The Girl:
I think he did good. I enjoyed it.
:::
Syesha Mercado : I Believe
Me:
Not my kind of music. Her voice just doesn’t have the depth of a great soul or neuvo-R&B singer. Like my daughter said, she doesn’t have it.
The Girl:
She’s not the winner. She’s good though but doesn’t have it.
:::
Jason Castro : Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Me:
He’s pleasant. His look. His presence. His sound. It’s nice to listen to. He’s always nice to listen to. I’m waiting hear a spark; I want to see him passionate, on fire.
The Girl:
I like him. I think he did good. I think he gets better each week.
:::
Kristy Lee Cook : Anyway
Me:
The only country singer in the group and, while I don’t like the songs and music, I think she plays well to the people who will vote for her. She’s not a bad singer, really. Not my cup of tea, but she did good.
The Girl:
Ughh. My least favorite. (Got up to answer the phone.)
:::
David Cook : Innocent
Me:
Sounded disjointed in the beginning. It doesn’t help that I don’t know the song. His voice wasn’t strong enough to compete with the background singers.
The Girl:
I don’t think it was his best. But his was alright tonight. He’s one of the best in the competition.
:::
Carly Smithson : The Show Must Go On
Me:
I love Queen. I love Freddy Mercury. I didn’t love that. I think it is really, really rough to do a Queen song. Nice voice. I was bored.
The Girl:
I’m starting not to like her. She looks good. I liked it in the beginning.
:::
David Archuletta : Angels
Me:
The little bastard can sing, but he bores me to tears. Bores me every week. Maybe I’m too old (or too young) for his stuff. I can’t believe anyone will buy something he puts out.
The Girl:
I liked it. He’s good. Coming back. Best song in last few weeks.
:::
Brook White : You’ve Got a Friend
Me:
She’s the best girl in the bunch. Always comes across as genuine. She didn’t sing it as well as Carol King or James Taylor.
The Girl:
I like Brooke. She’s one of my favorites. Not her best song, but safe.
:::
Who’s gone? The girl says, “Syesha. Right? What do you think?” I think Carly. Kristy, who is on the bubble every week, slides through again.
