5 Things

This is a continuation of the Me-me-meme. I’m supposed to write five things on today’s To-Do list. Again, I’m going to break the rules. Today is over. There’s nothing left on today’s To-Do list. Let’s think about tomorrow.

  1. MEETINGS

    9AM “Morning Report”
    - I’m acting Director of Rehabilitation at one of my buildings while the real director is on maternity leave. The Morning Report is a run-down of what has happened of any import during the last 24-hours to any of the facility’s residents: doctor’s appoints, x-ray and lab results, falls and emergency restraints, pain issues, etc. This meeting is attended by all the nurse managers, the building administrator, social services, activities, and therapy. While it is behind the scenes, it is the most important meeting in the building, and directs the care of every resident.

11AM “Utilization Review” - This is a one-time per week meeting. It’s mostly about Medicare reimbursement in the nursing home. Medicare has some very stringent rules regarding the conditions where they will pay for skilled services in the subacute setting. A lot of money is on the line. If I misinterpret a guideline, or worse, ignore or twist it to my company’s benefit, I could cost the company millions of dollars.

2:30PM “Meeting With the Vice President” - My boss is the Vice President of the company. The day after our meeting he will have a board meeting with the owner. I will present my monthly report so that he can intelligently share the results with the owner. My piece is a small but important piece - imagine the above Utilization Review meeting times twelve, that is the financial impact to the company. I’ll hit him with some other odds and ends (e.g. contracts and check requests I want signed), but the bulk of it is a monthly review.
  2. REPORTS

Oh Crap! My monthly report isn’t done! I need to tie in salary expenses, broken down by employee discipline (Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies), type of employee (full-time, per diem, or agency), and facility, into my one-page report. I also have to double check the revenue figures and tie them to RUGs (Resource Utilization Groups … don’t ask).
  3. MARKETING

I write copy and complete artwork for 90% of the company’s marketing collateral. I need to finish printing 1,500 direct mail postcards, resize two approved ads into three additional sizes, and present another ad for approval. All that has to be completed before …
  4. GOLF

Wednesday nights at 5:45 my partner, Will, and I take on Ron and Roc in a 9-hole match. We are all good golfers and this means a lot to all of us. Will and I are the club’s reigning Two-Man Champions. We take that very seriously.Oh, there’s $4 cash money and bragging rights on the line too. The match also ties into a $30 end of the year bet. This is the thing that will get me through items 1-3.
  5. DRIVING (see Ten Years Ago I Was …)

Whew.
